Jaggery is commonly reffered to as ' unrefined sugar'. Compared to table sugar, jaggery has some amounts of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

There are more benefits of Jaggery than sugar like:-

  1. It prevents constipation by aiding digestion. It activates the digestive enzymes. It is good to intake jaggery after a meal.
  2. It acts as a detox, as it helps cleanse the liver by flushing out nasty toxins from the body.
  3. It is loaded with antioxidants and minerals like zinc and selenium which helps to prevent free radicals responsible for ageing.
  4. It helps to boost resistance against infections, build strong immunity and acts as a blood purifier.
  5. Eating a piece of jaggery daily can help women combat menstrual cycle symptoms including mood swings, cramps and abdominal pain.
  6. Jaggery is rich in iron and folate which helps prevent anaemia.
  7. It cools stomach, controls blood pressure, prevents respiratory problems, relieves joint pain.
  8. It is surprisingly effective as an aid for weight loss.


Jaggery is a good and stable source of energy. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that gets absorbed in the blood stream instantly and gives instant energy; Jaggery is a complex carbohydrate that gives energy to the body gradually.

This means that the level of blood sugar does not get raised immediately in the consumption of jaggery proving no harm to health.

Henceforth, Jaggery is a healthy substitution of sugar for our daily food intake to keep us healthy and fit.
